The Ice Cream Social

This evening I had the wonderful experience of going to an old fashioned ice cream social. There is a church out in the middle of no where that has an ice cream social once a year. The past couple of years, there has been a new Pastor, and they had stopped. This year, they had one. This is an event I have looked forward to for two years. Here is the menu: Home made beef and noodles (even the noodles were home made), mashed potatoes, green beans, cole slaw, apple sauce, home made bread, any kind of pie or cake you could possibly imagine, and home made vanilla, and black walnut ice cream. ALL for a free will offering. There is a basket at the end of the line, to drop in whatever you wish. It is a good sized basket, and was HEAPING with bills and checks. There is something to be said for not asking a specific amount of money for a meal. The church appeals to the idea that you pay what you think the meal is worth and, of course, if you find it in your heart to give more, well, you can. There are people from miles away that come, even from another state. This year there was even a barber shop quartet singing for our entertainment. As we left, we went upstairs, and admired all of the new additions that had been made, all with proceeds from ice cream socials. In the parking lot was also a trailer that sold quarts of the ice cream for three dollars. By the time we left, they had sold out. I have a full belly, and feel good about giving to a community. A good time was had by all.
